Rare phenomenon of having three blood vessels in the kidney

Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune have successfully performed a kidney transplant on a 40-year-old female patient with a challenging kidney failure who has a different blood group and many blood vessels.

Aarti Mashale, a housewife, had various health complaints since 2015. His illness began with a diagnosis of SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) and Lupus Nephritis, an immunocompromised disease. Five different types of medication.

His hypertension was always uncontrolled despite the use of methods. In 2020, his illness worsened - herpes zoster and diabetes were diagnosed. April 2021 in He showed symptoms of kidney failure Due to kidney failure, he died in 2023 Passan was put on dialysis. On the one hand, Aarti's condition was deteriorating and it was necessary to transplant her kidney. Her husband Rahul Mashale (43) expressed his willingness to donate one of his two kidneys. But due to ABO incompatibility (blood type mismatch) i.e. Rahul's blood type is AB+ and Aarti's blood type is A+, this change became very challenging. After further investigation another challenge came up which was Rahul.

He had three blood vessels in his kidney, a condition found in only 10 percent of the world's population. Overcoming all these challenges, Dr. Tarun Jeloka and Dr. Anand Dharaskar and his team successfully completed kidney replacement surgery on 18 July 2024 made.

While giving more information about this case, Consultant Urology Dr. Anand Dharaskar said this case was very challenging for us. Transplantation was more complicated because the donor kidney had three blood vessels while the recipient had three blood vessels.

There was only one blood vessel. Connecting the three blood vessels of the donor was a difficult task and hence we transplanted the kidney through laparoscopic surgery, a procedure with minimal scarring, faster healing and better aesthetics. Since Even from donors Accepted goes but, Kidney taking to the patient only one blood vessel Since this The thing is also expensive It was difficultSo very surprising.

It was also necessary to ligate vessels to obtain blood flow. Consultant Nephrology and Transplant Dr. Tarun Jeloka said. We did this transplant according to the criteria that have to be followed when having different blood groups. To reduce the risk of rejection, we started the patient on monoclonal antibody drugs two weeks before the transplant, followed by more drugs one week before. Another procedure we use to remove harmful elements from the blood.

Also known as plasma exchange. Which brought that level down to a safe level. Transplants were as successful as matched despite the increased risk. The patient's kidney normalized within two days and the patient went home without any complications.
